A major move to make Germany better assessable for Chinese students has been announced.

Chinese Gaokao-graduates can now directly enroll to German Universities. Freshmen Course will be not mandatory any more. The former interview at the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) will be replaced by checking the documents remotely, without a personal interview (so-called “Gaokao-Verfahren”)

Gaokao now basically can be considered to be equal to Germany´s Abitur.

Gaokao-graduates can enroll into German Universities if they meet the following requirements:

  • 70% or more of total maximal Gaokao-score
  • Chinese and English (or another foreign language) as a subject in school
  • Natural science or math as a subject in school

While this is major step to ease the process of Chinese students enrolling into German Universities, German and English language requirements (mostly DSH / Test Daf or IELTS / TOEFL) will remain in place. Because Gaokao only fulfills the formal requirements, being admitted by a Germany University will stay challenging.

With this easing policy, Germany has become even more attractive for Chinese students.
